TWO PRESIDENTS are brought together in this impressive, four-language ship's passport, printed in four-columns (English, French, Spanish and Dutch). President Madison and Secretary of State Monroe authorize Captain Isaac Jones of the schooner CANOWA, to pass from Philad...elphia to Lisbon, Portugal with a cargo of "Sundries", as war is looming with Great Britain. This 4 language ships pass was issued by the government to protect merchant ships on the open sea's and confirm citizenship of the ship as belonging to the United States. Siezure of merchant ship by the British led to the War of 1812 and President Madison declared war on Great Btitain later in the year of 1812 the same year this was issued and has very Historical significance. This is a museum piece.
1 page, large oblong folio (16¾ x 21½in), 2 paper seals along left and bottom margins, archivally matted and handsomely framed under 98% UV-blocking conservation grade glass. Dampstained and lightly soiled, as shown, partial fold tear archivally repaired on verso, otherwise very good. Signatures are bold and clear, as shown.
