Original Description:
Vintage Omega Speedmaster 2998-4 321 chronograph watch. This watch was owned by lieutenant Derrick Joseph Glarvey of the British Royal Armoured Corps who was awarded with an MBE in 1966 for his gallantry. The following is taken from the London Gazette. September 1966CENTRAL CHANCERY OFTHE ORDERS OF KNIGHTHOOD St. James's Palace, London S.W.I.30th September 1966.The QUEEN has been graciously pleased to giveorders for the following appointment to the MostExcellent Order of the British... Empire:On 31st March 1966, Lieutenant Glarvey wascommanding the Al Echelon of the Regiment duringa period of training on the Soltau Training Area. His Echelon had just moved into location southeast of Bispingen and close to the railway lineBispingen-Soltau. He was in his command vehicle. At 0850 hours an accident occurred between aFerret Scout Car of the Regimental ReconnaissanceTroop and a civilian train on an unguarded railwaycrossing a short distance from the Echelon area.Hearing the sound of the accident and subsequentlyseeing what appeared to be an explosion and fire, Lieutenant Glarvey ran to the scene of the accident. He found that a Ferret Scout Car Mark II hadbeen hit by a train and was lying overturned andin flames beside the railway line. The turret hadbeen removed by the impact and one member of thecrew was trapped within it with his clothing alightfrom the hips downward.Lieutenant Glarvey quickly took command of thesituation, rapidly obtaining fire-fighting equipmentand with assistance pulled the turret clear of thetrapped commander who was unconscious and diedsome ten minutes later. A second gravely injuredman was discovered lying some fifteen yards fromthe scene. He left the two known casualties in thecare of the Regimental Medical Officer now present. His knowledge of the dying commander and theseriously injured casualty led him to believe that thedriver of the scout car had not yet been located. He moved to the scout car which was still in flamesalthough the fire was being tackled. He clearedwreckage from the escape hatch and attempted' tolook inside but flames and smoke made visionimpossible. The scout car was completely full with fuel, justhaving replenished within the Echelon, and the dangerof an explosion was ever present. Regardless of thedanger he continued clearing kit and equipment frominside the car. He discovered the legs of the driver, and in view of the accident, the flames and thesmoke, he thought the driver must be dead, butnevertheless with the subsequent assistance of theRegimental Medical Officer he managed to removethe unconscious man. At this later stage the flameshad been extinguished. As a result of the accidentthe commander and passenger died of their injuriesbut the driver survived and is again fit for normalduties.Lieutenant Glarvey displayed outstanding qualitiesin taking quick command and control of an emergency. With speed, efficiency and coolness he orderedrescue and fire-fighting operations. There is no doubt the driver owes his life toLieutenant Glarvey, who displayed outstanding qualities and cool courage and a complete disregard forhis own safety.
I have no evidence that this watch was worn when this incident occurred but the watch has been extensively worn from its purchase date in 1962. The case side bears the inscription D, Glarvey 1962 and over the years the original bracelet has been replaced around 1968 with a reference 1035 bracelet, The end pieces I have fitted are 19mm aftermarket/non original end pieces.  I have fitted some vintage 2998 pushers as modern pusher were fitted. The crown is also a more modern service part. The bezel is faded and is well worn but original to the watch. The dial has spotting across the surface on close inspection through a loupe, also note the number 2 on the left sub dial has a tiny part missing. The lume reacts to the Geiger counter but I cannot be 100% that it has not been redone at some point, I would say I am 85% that it is original, it has turned dark green and does look old and quite uniform. The marker at 12 has certainly been touched up a long time ago.The case has been very lightly brushed on the sides, so lightly dings and scratches are still plainly visible. The lug tops have been polished too. The case remains thick like i should, it is not displaying signs of over polishing at all like some watches I have seen in the past, so rest assured the lugs are in great condition. The movement has been cleaned twice in my vintage Elma cleaning machine I have also fitted a new genuine Omega mainspring. I am by no means a watchmaker but a very carefully novice. Moebius oils/grease were used and the watch is running well, all chronograph functions are perfect too.The serial is spot on for the 2998-4 so no worries there. The hands are later service hands, I am not sure of the age of these but they look far better than the incorrect stick type hands. The hands I have used are the hands sold by Watchco some years ago which many collectors have used over the years. A well used 2998 Speedmaster with a nice bit of history and story attached, this watch was never going to be a safe queen.Only the watch as pictured is available, no other accessories are included. Thanks for looking.
