Original Description:
JURASSIC FEATHERED DINOSAURLarge cast stone panel (3.5 kilos), pale ochre quartzite limestone composite, 17 inches length (48.5 cm), 14 inches width (36 cm), inset hanger & back-label ID. Casting of Berlin Natural History Museum's most famous specimen, the controversial "Feathered Dinosaur" discovered in 1861 at Germany's Solhofen Lithographic Limestone deposits. A duplicate cast is also kept on permanent display at both the British Museum and Australia Museum. The first fossil discove...ry to reveal dinosaurs with feathers, "Archaeopteryx" was originally believed to be a genus of early bird transitional between dinosaurs and modern birds. Inhabiting the swampy coastal lagoons of Germany's Late Jurassic 150 million years ago, Archaeopteryx grew to nearly two feet in length.Despite its obvious flight capability, Archaeopteryx possesses a number of dinosaur characteristics not found in birds. In particular, it shares features with Dromaeosaurs and Troodontids, such as jaws lined with rows of dangerous sharp teeth, three fingered hyperextensible "killing claws, " a long bony tail and other unique skeletal features.Discovered only two years after Charles Darwin's "Origin of Species, " this specimen seemed to confirm Darwin's theory. With its birdlike beak, extended wings and feather-covered body, Archaeopteryx became prime candidate for the "Missing Link" between dinosaurs and birds. However, recent discoveries of other Feathered Dinosaurs in China have thrown all this into doubt, rekindling argument amongst modern paleontologists about whether Archaeopteryx is actually a primitive bird or incontrovertible evidence for dinosaurs having feathers.
