This specimen was acquired from an old collection, and the label identified it as a Sphenodiscus from South Dakota. This type of ammonite i...s extremely lenticular in shape. The ancient cephalopod has a very sharp keel, unlike the keel of Cleoniceras. This 3-dimensional ammonite is loose, being fully free of matrix on all sides. The fossil is well preserved, and the distinct suture pattern is readily seen. The natural coloration of the fossil is quite striking. This is a fine example of this unusual ammonite from the Fox Hills Formation.
