Antique Chinese Dragon Gold Couching Embroidery Blue Silk Opera Robe Coat Vtg
Item History & Price
This antique Chinese dragon gold couching embroidery blue silk opera robe coat dates from the 1920s. It is made of a blue silk fabric, with gold metallic thread couching embroidery work, which tiny red stitches hold the couching work together giving it a contrasting copper color appearance. There are hand embroidered gold dragons with 5 open claws, large round black pupil eyes on the front, back, sleeves and c...ollar trim with clouds of smoke, flaming pearls, lotus flowers and waves of water along the bottom. This theatrical opera costume fabric was created in the style of Manchu Qing Dynasty dragon court robe with very long exaggerated sleeves, white silk collar trim, a single knotted toggle closure on the neck, silk lappet ties hanging down the front, side skirt vent slits and is fully lined in a light blue silk fabric. The robe measures 36 inches long, with a 44 inches chest, 44 inch waist and 27 inches long sleeves. It is in good as-is condition with some soiling staining on the inside silk lining, 2 small frayed holes on the white silk trim collar and some faint underarm discoloration with a tiny frayed hole on one arm (see close-ups). This is truly a wonderful piece of antique Chinese wearable art!
