it measures 18 1/2 inches in diameter and is 6 inches tall.
i purchased this from the authors of the pictured book. this is a 1930s beautiful very early Shearwater Vase. it is crisply carved with waves and wings and the signature is that of James McConnell Anderson. the pot was thrown by Peter Anderson and glazed in Shearwater's original (what they call gun metal and i call seafoam) glaze.
the bottom of the pot shows Shearwater's earl...iest mark and James McConnell Anderson's "Mac" signature. he didn't sign any other pieces, that are known, with this signature. it was verified by Sara Anderson, (as Mac was deceased at that time), Mac's wife, as his, but it probably was a very early one, as she stated to the authors of the book.
it feels heavy, as Peter Anderson usually threw pieces a little heavier for his brothers to carve; interestingly, the rim is not perfectly round, as shown in photo #5.
i'm selling this as being old, it is time to let some of my pottery collection go to other people and places. please note that the book is included with the pot. doesn't seem correct to break them up.
among Shearwater pots, this one is unique and wonderful. it is the ultimate piece for any collector of American Art Pottery.
