WILLIAMS, Wellington (Cartographer)
'A NEW MAP OF THE UNITED STATESUP WHICH ARE DELINEATED ITS VAST WORKS OF INTERNAL COMMUNICATION ROUTES ACROSS THE CONTINENT &c. SHOWING ALSO CANADA AND THE ISLAND OF CUBA'
Philadelphia. Lippincott, Grambo & Co. 1854 (1st state ; Nebraska Territory not divided into Kansas and Nebraska) Measures 25.25 inches x 30.25 inches unfolded. Folded: 5.75 in x 3.25 in. Green c...loth cover ; top panel perished long ago. Several fold seperations nicely sealed on verso with cello tape. No losses. Light marginal spotting as might be expected. Bright, outline hand coloring as issued. Overall, very good or better condition.
A SCARCE example of this early state 1854 iteration of Williams' US map which preceded Congress' passing of the Kansas-Nebraska Act on May 30, 1854 where the land was divided into two distinct territories. The later version of this 1854 map (which can be seen in David Rumsey's collection) shows the 'Nebraska' Territory on this map divided into 'Kansas' and 'Nebraska' with the Kansas print added. (One other issue point is the address of the Lippincott office on our copy shows the address as '14 N. Fourth St.' the later versions show '20 N. 14th St.' as the address.)
This map also features four inset maps of 'Map of the Island of Cuba', 'City and Harbor of Havana'. 'Map of the Niagara River Falls' , ' Map of California, Oregon, New Mexico, & Utah'. Curiously, the Northwest inset of the western states shows Portland as 'Oregon City' and 'Fillmore City' as the capital of Utah.
All in all a fine and very collectible and imminently displayable map quite worthy of framing and display for inspiring hours of conversational interest and historical discussion.
